  1. Mandolin Brothers

Right: model 5250 (1928).began in 1864 as a partnership of businessmen George W. Lyon and Patrick J. Healy, acting as the outlet for publisher.

By 1865, Lyon & Healy had expanded into and some small instruments. The company achieved independence by 1880, and around 1888 the company launched fully into fretted and plucked instruments (, and )under the 'Washburn' brand, which happened to be Lyon's middle name.

Tracing the history of any particular instrument of this period presents many obstacles. Not only did the Lyon & Healy company often change designs to follow the rapidly evolving consumer demand, but the company also repaired instruments, and offered engraving services, including decorating instruments that it retailed but did not actually manufacture. As well, they built instruments for other retailers and distributors under various, and of some models. In 1912, Washburn introduced the Lakeside Jumbo guitar, which some consider the first dreadnought-sized guitar. It bridged the gap between smaller-bodied 'parlor' guitars of the late 19th and early 20th century and modern-day acoustic guitars.George Lyon retired from the company in 1889 (died 1894).

Patrick Healy then led the company into a period of major expansion, beginning with a larger new factory and improved mass-production techniques, and soon dominated the domestic market. Their 1892 catalog claimed to manufacture 100,000 instruments annually. Healy died 1905.By the 1920s, Lyon & Healy faced growing competition from other instrument manufacturers as well as from the rise of other forms of entertainment, particularly. Lyon & Healy gradually shifted manufacturing chores onto wholesaler Tonk Brothers, to whom they sold the guitar portion of the business in 1928, continuing to produce their own lines of harps, pianos, and organs.Tonk Brothers turned to manufacturer J.R.

Stewart Company to purchase and operate the massive factory, but this transition proved problematic and Stewart went bankrupt in 1930. Some of the Stewart assets were acquired by the, which had purchased the 'Regal' brand name in 1908 from Lyon & Healy (who acquired it in 1905). Regal was chosen to reopen the Washburn factory (producing Regal instruments as well). Though the Washburn brand was preserved, it never regained its preeminence, and by the early 1940s had declined to nothing.Modern era An unbroken lineage is often alluded to by Washburn International, in press releases and advertising materials, and on the company website:Washburn has been building stringed instruments since 1883. 130 years of history is at the root of our strong foundation building high quality instruments. There is no direct connection between the original Washburn brand and the modern Washburn International. In the early 1960s, retail store The Chicago Guitar Gallery hired Rudolf 'Rudy' Schlacher, a young German, as a repair technician. A few years later, Schlacher opened The Sound Post (in Evanston, Illinois) to focus on guitars.

He soon realized the sales potential for lower-cost quality instruments.Tom Beckmen and his wife Judy Fink Beckmen in 1972 left careers as music salesman and teacher (respectively) to launch a wholesale music business in Los Angeles, Beckmen Musical Instruments. It was Beckmen Music that resurrected the Washburn name, and beginning in 1974 applied it to a series of quality imported acoustic guitars, made in Japan by Terada, as well as a selection of mandolins and banjos.Schlacher and Rick Johnstone, as Fretted Industries, Inc., acquired the Washburn name in 1977 (for $13,000) when the Beckmens took their business a different direction, and so the Washburn name was returned to Chicago.

With assistance from (founder of ), Schlacher was able to find instrument factories in Japan that could meet the desired standards.Fretted Industries acquired other lines as well, such as.Schlacher bought out Johnstone in 1987, and changed the company name to Washburn International. A stateside manufacturing operation was opened in 1991 for higher-end, short-run, and one-off instruments, as well as development and prototyping.

That year, a article confidently places Washburn 'among the top three guitar manufacturers in the world,' behind only and.On December 15, 2002, Washburn International announced that it had completed acquisition of, and would be rolling its assets into that company in a. Schlacher remained as, appointing Gary Gryczan to; Gryczan had been Washburn's CFO from 1995 through 1998. The new USM's headquarters were in (440 E. Courtland Street), which also housed the stateside Washburn, often referred to as 'the USA Custom Shop.' Schlacher announced completion of selling USM to JAM Industries on August 24, 2009, and that he would be stepping away from his company after fully four decades. We are pleased to join forces with a strategic partner like Jam Industries, that has a long, successful history in the music industry and has been a long-term business partner with U.S. Music for more than 20 years. It has been a thrilling and rewarding 40-year ride that has allowed me to realize my dreams and goals. As R S Consulting he remained a consultant to the musical-instrument industry and was an executive producer for a small-budget filmThe corporate offices of U.S.

Music were relocated to in 2012.Production Very few modern Washburn instruments have been built by the company itself. It has relied on outside factories and luthiers to fulfill their designs and meet public demand. The first modern Washburn instruments were full-size acoustic guitars imported from Japan by Beckmen Music. The 1974 range included one folk-style guitar (W-200) and eight dreadnoughts of increasing quality and decoration: W-240-12, W-250, W-260, W-280, W-300, W-300-12, W-500, W-600.Under Rudy Schlacher, most Washburn models were ordered in runs of 200 units, rather than ongoing production; if sales went well, a further run might be ordered.

This application of (or ) kept the company from needing to warehouse and liquidate overproduction, improving profitability. As a result, many Washburn instruments (acoustic or electric) are difficult to locate once out of production, and are scarcer than the 'limited editions' of other manufacturers. The first Washburn electric guitars were the Wing Series models, offered 1978-1984. These instruments featured innovative push-pull split humbuckers, brass hardware and inlays, and construction. Most of the Wing Series models were produced by Yamaki, a Japanese manufacturer of Washburn acoustic guitars as well as their own Daion brand (late 1970s to early 1980s).By 1991, production of Washburn instruments had shifted almost entirely to Korea, built.

When Samick opened their, Indonesia, facility in 1992, this factory also began to produce Washburn-branded instruments, generally identifiable by an 'SI-' serial number prefix.Between 1994 and 2001, ten models of acoustic guitar were built for Washburn in the United States, five by (Tacoma, Washington) and five by (Lewiston, Maine).Washburn brought out a line of four USA-made dreadnoughts, available from 2002 to 2008. These were the D-78, D-80, D-82, and D-84.

(All had the '-SW' suffix, for 'solid wood,' indicating that no laminate wood was employed.)In 2012, when JAM Industries declined to renew the lease on the Mundelein facility, the Washburn luthiery closed. At the time, the Washburn facility was the ninth-largest employer in the village (the third-largest business), providing 180 jobs. The stated intent was to reopen at a smaller building in Buffalo Grove (1000 Corporate Grove Drive) but this did not materialize. A few Washburn models (particularly the N4) are produced in Cincinnati. As of 2017, primary production has largely shifted from Korea to factories in Indonesia and China.Innovations Most widely known for its guitars (both and ), Washburn also makes, and, as well as accessories including guitar cases, clothing, and straps. In the 1980s, Washburn introduced the Festival Series of acoustic/electric guitars (the EA series, for 'electrified acoustic'). They were thinner than standard acoustic guitars and less acoustically resonant by design, thereby reducing susceptibility to, a significant problem using acoustic or electrified acoustic guitars in large-venue performances.

The addition in later models of sound slots (rather than the traditional round soundhole), a patented innovation, further reduced the possibility of feedback, and the guitars quickly became the go-to stage acoustic for artists such as,. In the early 1990s when introduced their series, hardly a show went by without seeing a Festival Series guitar. The design also lent itself well to acoustic basses, and Washburn's AB Series quickly became popular both for its look and its tone, whether amplified or unplugged. Of a Washburn RB2802 eight-string bass.In recent years, Washburn licensed several guitar construction features:.

the Tuning System — a corrected-temperation tuning formula, using a compensated nut and saddle to minimize the inherent problems of the Western tuning formula. The BFTS was first used by Washburn in 1995 on a very few models, then increasingly with the introduction of the WI-64 (1999), and was entirely phased out after the 2010 production year. At its peak, this system came standard on U.S.-made Washburn guitars and basses and the better imports. Stephen's Extended Cutaway — a unique neck joint invented by luthier Stephen Davies to allow greater unrestricted access for a guitarist's fretting hand. J5 Jazz guitar. Giant makers of fine instruments of the 19th& 20th centuries. Their instruments were beautiful and wonderful sounding and one of the finest brands of mandolins in the world. I know nothing about music or instruments and found the above descriptions in a catalog.

Nice purfling and binding, and star and diamond designs on the headstock. I am not sure as to the maker, since the vast majority of the label is long gone, but it looks to this inexpert eye to look like a product of Lyon& Healy, possibly in the American Conservatory line. I play guitar, rather than mandolin, so my. Knowledge is limited in this area, and I would be glad to include any expert information that comes along.

The instrument looks very sound. I do not see any cracks(save for a crack in the binding on the bass side of the neck at the 8th fret) And there is very little fret wear. There are some scuffs and scratches throughout, typical use wear for an instrument of the age. One of the screws is missing from the tuner plate on the back of the headstock. The images show the story of this good.

Honest old instrument. It has not been used in years, so after a quick set up, fret polish, new strings, etc. It should be ready to go! If you have any questions please ask I will be happy to send more pictures. Thanks and hope we can find this a caring home. Free shipping in the U.S. International shipping please contact me first.

Bowl Back Mandolin This is a very old bowl back 8 string mandolin that should be used strictly for parts but if one wanted to take the time I am sure it can be repaired but would take ALOT of work. I was told this was a Lyon and Healy but after further review I do not believe this to be true. It has a tag that is hard to read but I can make out'Imperial Company.

Cincinnati Ohio' After researching it looks as if it could be possibly Larson Bros. I am not 100% on this. If you have any questions or know what this could be please feel free to message me! This is an old mandolin that we took in for consignment. I was told this was made in 1910. It has a fabric cover with it. It is missing two strings. The Makers Tag is inside the Mandolin.

I know nothing about instruments so please ask questions and look at the pictures. There are no cracks or obvious flaws that I can tell.

This is an old made in the USA bowl back mandolin probably over 100 years old. Looks like the type sold in catalogs back then, probably made by Lyon& Healy or Regal. There is no name anywhere on it. I checked inside with a flashlight, as well. Basically complete, has a top crack, see pics, and also the top has pulled loose from the one side, again see pics.

This is all solid wood, as you can see. It pushes back together fairly well, so you will have no problems clamping and glueing it back.

There is no wood missing. There may be a small amount of the binding and wood marquetry missing, see pics, so be aware of that.

Doesn't look like much is missing. Otherwise, seems complete. The action on this is really nice and low, so should make a good player. Neck is straight.

Need lubricated, but work fine. Bowl is fine, no cracks. Neck joint is fine, very solid. Neat old mando that desires a second chance to sing again. I think a talented person can fix this very easily. Please check the pictures as they will describe the repairs needed better than I can. This is being sold as a repair project due to the cracks mentioned, so be aware all sales are final, no returns or refunds on this one.

There is no case. Shipping is $25 USA, lower 48 states only. International shipping is $125 Payment is by Paypal only, please. Buy with confidence, my 14th year on eBay, people seem to like my stuff!

Thanks for looking, Jeff. THIS IS TWO VERY OLD LYON& HEALY BOWL BACK MANDOLINS EARLY 1900'S(MAYBE OLDER) ONE HAS BEEN REWORKED BY A LUTHIER IN THE PAST. ACCORDING TO THE ORIGINAL OWNERS FAMILY. IT APPEARS TO BE STRUCTURALY SOUND ALL AROUND, THE FRET BOARD NEEDS HELP, AND IT'S MISSING ALL OF THE HARDWARE EXCEPT FOR THE TAIL PIECE BASE PLATE, THE ORIGINAL LABEL IS STILL AFFIXED INSIDE. THE OTHER ONE'S TOP IS PUSHED IN AND THE CENTER SEAM IS CRACKED AND SEPARATED ALL THE WAY DOWN, ALL OR MOST OF THE BINDING IS STILL THERE AS THE ORIGINAL TORTISE SHELL PICKGUARD AND IVORY INLAY WORK. IT APPEARS THAT ALL BRACING IS STILL THERE TOO, THE ORIGINAL LABEL IS LOOSE AND INCLUDED. BOTH NECKS APPEAR STRAIGHT AND SOLID WITH LITTLE OR NO'TWIST' THAT'S ABOUT ALL I KNOW ABOUT THEM, I DO THINK THERE IS AT LEAST ONE GOOD RESTORED MANDOLIN BETWEEN THE TWO.

AND A GOOD START ON A SECOND ONE, THANKS SHIPPING IS LOWER U.S. ONLY, ALL OTHERS CONTACT ME AND I'LL SEE WHAT I CAN DO. I DO MY OWN PACKING AND SHIP U.S.P.S.ONLY.

LYON& HEALY STYLE C MANDOLIN THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF A VINTAGE LYON& HEALY STYLE C MANDOLIN. THE ORIGINAL FINISH IS STILL SHINY AND IT APPEARS THAT THIS INSTRUMENT HAS BEEN WELL TAKEN CARE OF. THE SOUND IS NICE AND OPEN. BUT A BIT MORE PRECISE TO MY EARS THAN SIMILAR GIBSON MANDOLINS OF THE SAME TIME PERIOD. VERY STRONG VOLUME TOO. THE ORIGINAL TAILPIECE COVER AND THE VULCANIZED RUBBER PICKGUARD ARE STILL PRESENT AND THE FRETS ARE IN GREAT SHAPE WITH HARDLY ANY VISIBLE WEAR. NECK IS STRAIGHT AND THE ACTION IS COMFORTABLE.

THE SIDE DOT MARKER AT THE THIRD FRET APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THE VINTAGE CASE SHOWN IN THE PICTURES IS INCLUDED. FREE SHIPPING IN THE CONTINENTAL USA. Up for auction is Eastman’s version of the famous Lyon& Healy asymmetrical 2 point mandolin. In 2007 I purchased this mandolin new from Steve Perry of Gianna Violins. Friendsville, Tennessee.

It is a great mandolin that I used for classical and celtic music. It is in excellent condition with a great set up, low action, easy playability, and fine intonation.

It has very little to no fret wear, and cosmetically it is nearly perfect, with one exception. There is an area of about one inch long by a quarter inch wide that shows some minor finish checking. It is located on the side of the mandolin(treble side) where the binding meets the body. I took a close-up photograph to attempt to display it, but since they are very fine and limited to the finish, they do not show up well.

Only a very fine eye would notice this flaw, but I note it in the. Interest of full disclose, and I make every effort eliminate surprises after a purchase. It is currently strung with Jazz Mando JM11 flatwound strings and sounds great. For those not familiar with Eastman mandolins. This is their model MD804D oval hole mandolin in their Golden Age finish. It is my understanding that Eastman is longer offering this model or finish color in their current line of mandolins. This mandolin features a solid highly flamed maple body, sides, and neck, with a carved solid spruce top.

It has gold plated tuners along with a one piece gold plated tailpiece. It also features 3 ply binding on the headstock and body, ebony veneer on the back of the headstock, and side binding. It has a radiused ebony fingerboard with pearl dot inlays.

I had Steve Perry upgrade the nut and bridge saddle to walrus tusk, but the original nut and wooden saddle are included. The original case key, carrying strap, and instrument blanket are as new and included. Carefully read the above information and review the photographs. As this is a FINAL SALE. Except for a gross misrepresentation on my part.

The winning bidder is also responsible for a flat shipping charge(including insura. This Style A(asymmetrical body) Fiddlehead Mandolin was(and still is! The flagship and most desirable Lyon& Healy model of it's class. It's aesthetic and sonic beauty have captivated players and listeners for nearly a century.

The first owner/player of this particular gem was a lady journalist and Stanford University graduate. When she passed on it was inherited by her grandson who does not play. Be clear that this Mandolin is not suitable for Bluegrass. Lead wise yes. Having a strong and beautiful voice, but none of the oval hole models can match the f-hole mandolins for that percussive chop when vamping rhythm chords. For everything else it's more than suitable. You can use it for whatever you want, but I'm just saying.

As you can see from the photos it's in remarkably good condition. All original. The well worn case, with a few dings and light scratches that you might expect from a mandolin of it's age. When I first saw the instrument it was pointed out to me that there is a slight but visible hair line crack at the bottom of the headstock, backside opposite the nut.

See photo) The owner said he took it to a Luthier for assessment and that the judgement was to leave it alone since it's shallow, doesn't cross the reinforcement strip, and is not a structural threat. After I played it, I could have cared less! However, after taking possession, I took it to my Luthier and while he concurred with the first evaluation, he decided to seep some aliphatic glue into it. I'm not a collector, I'm a player and I've been playing it almost daily for two years, under full string tension and no problems. I am the second owner/player to be blessed with it's gifts.

I have played about a half dozen examples of this model, and while all have possessed great tone, this one is by far the loudest of the lot. Even while jamming in an ensemble of assorted guitars, fiddles, other mandos, dobro, and banjo, this lil' rascal cut right through the mix when playing le. Up for bidding is a circa 1900 Washburn mandolin. Serial number 162210. Also stamped 130 on the top of the peghead.

There is a burned in stamp of George Washburn on the neck block. There are 2 paper labels inside the sound hole. One says'The New Washburn Latest Model' The other label is a guarantee. The body is made of rosewood and the top is spruce with an inlaid faux tortoise pickguard. There is ivoroid binding around the top and fingerboard. The bridge and fingerboard are made of ebony.

There are etched mother of pearl inlays in the fingerboard. The tailpiece and peghead backplate are engraved.

The tuning buttons are ivoroid. The neck is straight and the frets are like new. The action is a little high but the bridge can be shaved at the bottom to alleviate that.

The top is a little wavy in the lower bout but does not affect the. Playability or looks of this mandolin. This is a mandolin that has survived in wonderful condition.

Original case included. Payment Due within 3 Days. 5 Day Auction. For your consideration is a fine vintage bowl back(curved back) mandolin. Everything on this wonderful instrument is original.

Except the strings! It is made of beautiful rosewood and has a fantastic patina that shows off the varied tones and grains. Quite a number of mandolins were made in this style around 1910 and this one is believed to be made by Lyon and Healey, though there is no longer a paper tag inside. Check out the beautiful pick guard and inlay on the sound hole and top edges. There are four mother of pearl dots on the dark brown fret board. Black heads, and smooth metal tail piece. Very nice for around 90 to 100 years old!

There is no case offered for this instrument. Measurements: 22 ½ inches tall from head to tail.

7 7/8 width over the bridge, Condition: This mandolin is in very good condition. I had a luthier look it. Over(I know nothing of mandolins) and was told that it has all original market parts. Except strings.

He did notice that there is a hole drilled into the head, which was done by the previous owner, most likely for a strap or to hang. The mandolin has been played by a leftie so the strings have always been strung opposite than traditionally done.

The finish is worn away where the anchor little finger set while in use. The luthier also noted that the strings are slightly elevated off the bridge(I took a side photo) The top has four very small dents between the bridge and the tail but it does not detract for the beauty or from the tone. The bowl back is in nice condition though the luthier could see three hairline fractures between rosewood strips. It was not a concern to the luthier. The tone was not tested because there are very old strings plus there are just three sets of strings instead of the required four sets. Although every effort is made to describe items accurately. Defects may sometimes escape my attention.

Please contact me immediately if you are unhappy with your item as returns will be accepted within 14 days. After we correspond through email and I receiv. This is a really nice vintage mandolin that by all appearances looks to be a Lyon& Healy American Conservatory. It has the classic American Conservatory mother of pearl inlays on the neck. And a very detailed mother of pearl butterfly on the headstock.

That said, the sticker on the inside says'Chase, Trademark' I tried to photograph it. The rosette and majority of the inlay on the top is mother of pearl, and it lights up like a laser show in the sun! It is complete and in perfect tact. The back appears to be Brazilian rosewood, with 25 ribs(25 white stripes) The binding is all in great shape, with only a couple tiny spots missing on 2 ribs(see photo of back) It has a really cool crown tailpiece cover that snaps open.

Overall, this mandolin in in excellent shape for it's age. There is a small hairline crack in the. Pickguard(see photos) and a very slight crack on the top that goes from the top side of the tailpiece to where the top bends at the bridge. There are some surface scratches on the top from playing. Please ask questions. I'm a guitar guy.

And I don't know about mandolins. 5 DAY NO RESERVE AUCTION! Ships to USA only. Lm3vhp.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d72f%2Bjw%60%3Elm3vhp-144b135ce18-0xfd. Up for auction is a Vintage Lyon& Healy American Conservatory Bowlback Potato Bug Mandolin. It is used and playable.

But work is need to bring it upto optimal playability. The top is very worn and there is a part of the binding that has been broken off, see pic 10. The back appears to be rosewood. Due to its age, it is possibly Brazilian. On the back there is a separation between two of the planks which goes most of the length on the back and another crack on the bottom of the bowl.

Inside of the bowl looks to be lined with some sort of canvas, which is ripped where it separation is. This is a lovely Vintage Antique Lyon& Healy Bowl Back Mandolin I am not sure of the exact year.it has a number on the inside on the end of the neck that I couldn't photograph well enough to see.the number on it it' 112047' though the first number is a bit foggy. From what I could find it's likely dated from late 1890's to early 1900's and made in Chicago. USA This is from my folks estate so other than it was on a shelf for years.

I don't have much history to offer. This item is as you see it-no case or any other items/documents. I cannot asses how much if any restoration other than strings it will need to play because I don't play any string instruments myself. In examining. Not see any cracks or splits in the wood-there is some slight wear on the part where you would strum the strings which I presume is just normal for use.

As you can see in photo, there are a couple slight scratches on the bottom/back. They are not very apparent and I think would'vanish' with some Old English Scratch cover.they do not seem deep or injurous. I see there is a bit of intricate inlay on the neck that is different in shape than any I have been able to find on the internet to compare.

The top back of the neck behind where the strings are secured is covered in an original metal plate.I do not see any writing or numbers on it. I have photographed the label inside for you to see. If you have any questions please feel free to email me BEFORE YOU BID OR AUCTION CLOSES and I will do my best to answer promptly for you. I am a certified Luthier and in my opinion this mandolin is museum quality. It plays well and would make a fine instrument for either a collector or a musician. It has a very very nice tone. These instruments are very hard to find and especially one in this good of condition with the tail piece medallion still there and the original one piece bridge and one piece pic-guard, both made from ebony. I will add that the instrument is in fine condition but not new. The crack seen on the head stock is only in the laquer, not the wood. This is a very clean Lyon& Healy Style B mandolin from the 1920's.

Serial# is 383. Plays and sounds great. Spruce top with flame maple back and sides.

The top is repair free with a couple scratches. Sides are fine.

Back has a very small repaired crack that sits on the end block(see photo) Great label in excellent condition. The mahogany neck is straight. Ebony board and frets very clean. Heel did have a strap button that has been plugged. The headstock overlay does have a repaired crack caused by shrinkage of the center strip that runs the length of the two piece neck(see photo) Just a beautiful instrument.

Case is solid. I ship worldwide.

Thanks for looking and best of luck! Up for auction is a beautiful VINTAGE 1900 LYON& HEALY BOWL BACK MANDOLIN/ 8 STRING/ NO LABEL. This mandolin has no label or name.

In researching I have decided that it is a Lyon& Healy. It has no cracks that I can see. It is made of rosewood with a spruce top. It is fully bound, with a pearl inlay, a metal tailpiece and a tuner plate on the back.

There is no case. This is a beautiful mandolin and one for your consideration. Thanks for looking. FEEDBACK: If for some reason you are not completely satisfied with your purchase. This used 1920's era Lyon& Healy Style A Mandolin Banjo overall is in good condition and features the original Jos. Skin on a 11 inch rim. Bound ebony fretboard with a 13 inch scale and the stylish headstock and engraved tailpiece cover. The fretboard is straight with minimal fret wear and the instrument plays smoothly. The neck joint is stable and the instrument stays in tune. There are 2 alterations I see, there is an extra brass screw inserted from the inside of the rim into the neck and there is an extra hole drilled into the rim at the tail end above the original hole for the screw to secure the inside rim stick.

Unfortunately, there is one missing screw on an A tuner post securing the gear. This tuner still works despite missing the screw. Wonderful sounding instrument in good playing condition. This comes in its. Original case which has conderable wear on the outside but is clean on the inside and is structurally sound. Vintage 1900s Clifford Bowl Back Mandolin Exquisite Washburn Vega Lyon& Healy Up for sale we have a Vintage 1900s Clifford Mandolin. Clifford Mandolins previously produced in Kansas City. MO during the late 1890s and early 1900s.

The Clifford trademark was used on a variety of acoustic guitars and mandolins by J.W. Jenkins& Sons of Kansas City. Around 1895, Jenkins built a factory to start manufacturing guitars and they first used the names Clifford, Washington, and possibly Harwood.

It is unknown how long Clifford instruments were produced.but the factory burnt to the ground somewhere around 1898 to 1901 and all production came to a halt. The Brilliantone Mando. Leland' Flat-back mandolin made by Lyon& Healy(Washburn) in 1912. Rosewood back and sides, spruce top, mahogany neck.

13 3/4' scale length and 23 1/2' overall. This mandolin is in very good condition.

Except for a one issue- there is a closed split on the left side about 8'long(the picture does not show this very well) It does not impact integrity and playability. Top and bracing all sound. Plays and sounds great. Has the original. Well used canvas case with travel labels from early Montana resorts. Up for a NO RESERVE auction is one of 5 very fancy bowl back mandolins I have up for auction. So if this one does not interest you, maybe one of the other ones will, so check out my other listings!

Some of these need more work than others, and I will try to describe and picture any major faults for each mando. Anyway, this auction is for an ALL ORIGINAL very beautifully inlaid and unusual 1903 Carl Fischer Sorosis mandolin with its original leather case. This mando has survived crack free and is in pretty nice condition for its age.

I just restrung it with some Martin strings so it is ready to play. The only age related issue I see is a VERY slight hairline at the body end of the fingerboard due to probably slight shrinkage. The original tuners(same MFG as used on early 1900s Gibson's) work perfect and hold tune well. The Brazilian rosewood. Sides are heavily inlaid with colored wood?

To match the headstock and pickguard and there are pearl inlays on the neck and inlayed into the headstock for the tuner bushings. The neck is straight with nice frets and good action. This is ready to play or display! Carl Fischer was/is a publishing sheet music house out of NYC(I think they are still in business) that out sourced instruments in the early part of the 1900s. From what I have found on the internet, most of the mandolins seem to have been made by Lyon& Healy, but please chime in if you know more about this or these instruments! The mando comes shipped in its original hard leather case that is missing the strap latches on the end lid and the handle.

Shipping should be around 20.00 close to NY up to 35.00 on the west coast for USPS Priority. International bidders MUST contact me first prior to bidding.

Or I will cancel or not entertain any offers. Please call if you want to discuss this in person. Thanks, Rob 315 298 6797. Please check out my other auctions for more vintage guitars. Banjos and parts. Shipping can alway be combined when possible!

CHECK OUT THE OTHER COOL AND RARE GUITARS I ALSO HAVE LISTED ON EBAY. Up for sale today is a very nice bowl-back Mandolin made by Lyon& Healy(who also manufactured mandolins with the brand name Washburn) in Chicago. From what I can tell from the label this Mandolin was manufactured between 1890 and 1910 but I am not an expert. Overall the instrument is in beautiful condition. There is a crack in the fingerboard as seen in the pictures but it does not affect the playability of the instrument.

Additionally, the binding along the neck is still attached but may require minor touching up to ensure that it does not fall off. After all, the glue holding it on is about 100 years old! The neck is straight as an arrow and just begging to be played. The finish has a beautiful antique patina to it. There are no splits between the top and sides/back. The top appears to be made of maple with a rosewood back and fingerboard.

The bridge is a floating one. You will notice that there are no strings on the instrument in the pictures. I have removed them to aid in taking pictures of the fingerboard and label.

And also to ensure that there is no damage to the instrument during shipping. If you would like to have the instrument strung prior to shipping feel free to ask me and I will do my best to accommodate this request. This instrument does not come with a case.

With the holidays coming up. This item would make a fantastic gift for the music lover on your list! Please ask any questions before bidding as no returns are accepted. This is an antique hard chipboard mandolin case made by Geib and Sons to keep a Washburn or Lyon& Healy mandolin in. The narrow headstock area makes it exclusive to those instruments. Mandolins form the teens and twenties era with wide paddleheads will not fit into this case. The sides of the case are flexible enough i suppose to force the old Gibsons into it.

But it's not made for that. The case and tuner buttons of the instrument would sustain alot of unnecessary wear. This top, bottom and sides are all in pretty decent shape but as the photos bear out, the stitching has withered away and has left the case un-useable as is and will need restoration to be of any use. I can find no one in my area that will accept the task and i've sold my Lyon& Healy anyway and have no use for it once it's repaired. So here ya go.I'm. Offering it as is for repair.
